All Hail Chieffy: Azkals beat Vietnam anew, 1-0

MANILA, Philippines - Just when the semis door is about to shut down, the Azkals turned to a fallen hero to repeat the "Hanoi Miracle".
Chieffy Caligdong bounced back from a sub-par performance in a 2-1 loss to Thailand to score the lone goal in a 1-0 win Tuesday night at the Ramajangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand that put the Philippine Azkals' one foot in the semis of the AFF Suzuki Cup.
With five minutes left in the regulation, Caligdong received a well-placed lob pass in the left flank from Angel Guirado on top of the box and used his left foot to slot in the goal that roared all the way to the Philippines.
"Sabi ko sa sarili ko, darating din yung chance na makakabawi ako sa laro ko sa Thailand," Caligdong said in a phone interview with AKTV's Jason Webb and guests La Salle coach Hans Smit and former Azkal Armand del Rosario right after the match.
Caligdong, who started against Thailand, came in as the final substitute of the Azkals replacing James Younghusband in the 75th minute which proved to be the turning point of the erstwhile scoreless match. The 30-year old team skipper immediately made his presence felt but failed to connect in an earlier pass by Guirado. The duo linked up again, this time, with Guirado missing a chance to score as his header went straight to Vietnam's keeper Hong Son Duong. It was not until 10 minutes after he came in that Caligdong would get another chance to drill in the country's biggest goal in the tournament so far.
"Sobrang saya ko. Ibinigay ko 101%. Masaya kami lahat dito sa dugout but we can't celebrate. May laban pa kami. We have a big chance now to enter the semis," Caligdong added.
The Azkals now need to follow up this victory with another one against Myanmar on Friday to officially book a semifinals seat. Thailand clinched the first semifinals slot in their group with a 4-0 demolition of Myanmar in the nightcap for their second win in a row.
It was the second consecutive win for the Azkals over Vietnam, their only wins in their eight head-to-head meetings.
The ASEAN's top ranked Vietnam (138th) also lost 2-0 to the 143rd-ranked Azkals in the group stages of the same tournament two years ago that signaled the rise of the "Azkal-mania". The Azkals went on to their first semifinals appearance in the region's top flight competition and now has a great chance to repeat or even surpass that feat.
Caligdong was not the only hero, who stepped up in this match, for the Azkals.
There was Ed Sacapano who was also spectacular submitting a clean sheet after allowing two goals against Thailand in their opening game. Juani Guirado anchored the rock-solid Back Four alongside Rob Gier, Dennis Cagara and Ray Jonsson, who all worked doubly hard especially in the second half when the Red Warriors seemed to have taken control and collared the lion's share of possessions. And there were the coaching staff led by assistant coaches Edwin Cabalida and Edzel Bracamonte, who steadied the Azkals with timely substitutions, in lieu of suspended coach Michael Weiss.
Not until Guirado and Caligdong came in that momentum shifted back to the Azkals' favor on the night the country's top striker Phil Younghusband struggled on offense.
The Azkals was more compact and played better than the Thailand match early in the first half with Phil Younghusband getting a lot of scoring chances, none bigger than the one he had in the 11th minute. The younger Younghusband, however, muffed the chance to put the Azkals on board as he slipped in the last minute causing him to lose control of the ball.
With the Azkals up by 1 in the latter part of the match, Vietnam, who came here looking for the sweet revenge that never came, almost pulled a draw had Le Tan Tai's attempt did not hit the cross bar after Sacapano's deflection. The Azkals' defense held up in the closing minutes when the Vietnamese desperately looked for the equalizer.
The Azkals-Myanmar match will be telecast live 9pm on Friday over at AKTV on IBC right after the PBA double-header.

Chieffy steers Azkals to 2-0 win

THE Philippine Azkals surprised Macau with the timely entry in the second half of Chieffy Caligdong, who scored both goals in a 2-0 victory by the Filipinos in the four-nation Long Teng Cup Tuesday at the Kaohsiung national stadium in Taiwan.
Caligdong, who was supposed to rest for the entire match, came in for Fil-German Oliver Potschke and went on the offensive immediately, his heroics allowing the Azkals to score their first win in the tournament against two draws.
The 5’5” wonder from Pototan, Iloilo found his mark in the 51st and in the 82nd minutes to eventually emerge as the tournament’s most prolific scorer with four total goals.
So far, Hong Kong booters Sham Kwok Keung and Wong Chin Hung trail Caligdong with two goals apiece.
The 29-year-old Caligdong received a corner kick from Matthew Hartmann and went for short blast, which goalie Ho Man Wei deflected.
The Filipino crowd went wild as Caligdong stayed ahead of defender Pak Lin Hao and sent the ball back in after he caught the ball on the rebound for his first goal.
Then, Caligdong found another opening on the 87th minute when he got a pass from Hartmann, chesting it to the right post and into the net.
The Azkals, who played without suspended Fil-Spanish booter Angel Guirado, settled for second spot at the end of the 90-minute encounter and they could remain there depending on how the Hong Kong-Chinese Taipei game will finish. Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei both have the same 1-1-0 win-draw-loss records as of presstime.
If Chinese Taipei loses, the Azkals will stay in second. If the two squads draw, the Azkals will end up third.
The Azkals took possession for 71% of the time, but they only had two shots on target out of 10.
The tournament proved to be a good experience for the Azkals, who had some members of the Southeast Asian Games-bound national under-23 team in the roster.
Caligdong, who was rested because of injury in the second half of their game against Chinese Taipei last Saturday, has a total of 13 goals out of 13 international appearances since 2004.
He had two chances to score in the closing minutes, but Ho quickly got in the way in the 87th, while his last try in front of the goal mouth and the keeper went too high.
The Azkals fly to Singapore for their next friendly this Friday and then to Manila for another friendly with Nepal on Monday.

Azkals go for win, crown in Teng Cup

MANILA, Philippines - Forced to a 3-3 standoff by Hong Kong in their debut, the Philippine Azkals eye no less than a victory today against host Chinese-Taipei to boost their bid for the top plum in the 2011 Long Teng Cup in Kaohsiung, Chinese-Taipei.
The draw gave the Filipinos a point, leaving them no choice but to gun for a maximum two points against the Taiwanese in the single-round-robin tournament among four nations. The hosts whitewashed Macau, 3-0, in their first match Friday night.
"We will be in a very good position to win the tournament if we win today," said Azkals coach Michael Weiss.
For them to do so, it is imperative for the Azkals to improve on their defense.
"Our defending (against Hong Kong) was all over the place," said skipper Aly Borromeo. "But at least, there's familiarity now. We know how we will play together. We can't let Chinese-Taipei get that confidence unlike against Hong Kong."
A mix of veterans and members of the U-23 pool, the Azkals struggled with new combinations against the Hong Kong booters, who pounced on Phl's shortcomings to score two early goals.
The Azkals got the opportunity to pull off a come-from-behind win when Phil Younghusband scored on a penalty kick and Chieffy Caligdong hit two astounding strikes before limping off the field in the 79th minute. But a late goal by Hong Kong forced the standoff.
Caligdong said he'll be ready for the Chinese-Taipei matchup but one of the Azkals won't be seeing action in Jason de Jong, who's suspended for a red card in the HK duel.
"We will sit a little a bit deeper (on defense) and will be looking for counter-attacks. I hope everybody steps up, especially in terms of alertness and concentration," Weiss said.

KAOHSIUNG — Chieffy Caligdong struck twice but the Philippine Azkals couldn’t finish off what could have been a comeback for the ages and settled for a 3-3 stalemate against defending champion Hong Kong Friday night in a highly-physical Long Teng Cup opening-match at the National Stadium here.
Caligdong, the proud son of Barotac Nuevo who plays for the Philippine Air Force, delivered two clinical goals, after Phil Younghusband opened the scoring from the penalty spot as the Azkals, who trailed 0-2 after just 22 minutes, flirted with another fightback only to be stalled by poor defending on the set piece near the end.
In a draw that brought back memories against Myanmar and Sri Lanka early this year, the Azkals yielded a late goal on a free kick from just outside the area.
“We should have been rewarded with a if only for Caligdong’s performance,” said Azkals coach Michael Weiss, who paid tribute to the influential winger who limped off after sustaining a knee injury in the 78th minute.
“He’s an outstanding player and I’m glad he’s back into his old shape,” Weiss said of Caligdong, who jacked up his international goal count to 10.
“The comeback was brave and fantastic but we were unlucky,” added Weiss, who also took to task the referees for what he claimed were three “wrong” offside calls in the second half on Phil Younghusband and Ian Araneta.
“It’s the first time we’re playing with a squad like this but you have to admire the players for putting their heart into the game by coming back from two goals down,” said team manager Dan Palami.
The draw gave the Azkals and Hong Kong a point each. Chinese-Taipei and Macau are playing as of presstime.
Missing Europe-based standouts like Stephan Schrock, Neil Etheridge and Paul Mulders, the Azkals’ defensive frailties were exposed early and often as Hong Kong zoomed to a 2-nil advantage thanks to a second-minute strike from Lee Wai Lim and a header from Cheng Lai Hin 22nd minute.
“We were a little naive defensively and we were punished,” said Weiss.
Younghusband sparked the comeback with a penalty conversion in the 31st minute, after he was pulled down by Wai Chiu Ng, who was later given a red card for a foul on Caligdong in the 65th minute.
Left to beat one defender after a fine pass from Younghusband, Caligdong made it all square with a clinical left-footed finish from the left in the 44th minute after a frenetic exchange of scoring chances
A livewire act on the left flank, Caligdong made it 3-2 by beating two defenders before firing past Hung Fai Yapp in the 62nd minute, sending about 500 Filipino supporters, led by the traveling fan group Kaholeros, in the stadium in delirium.
Just when the Azkals were about to celebrate one of their biggest comebacks, Hong Kong struck through Cheng Lai Hin, who was the quickest to react on the rebound after Chan Siu Ki’s free kick was saved into the post by the debuting Roland Muller.
Muller, who plays for Duisburg in the German second division, was the busier of the two goalkeepers, needing to be alert to stop Kwok Pin Pong late in the match, even as substitute Mark Hartmann drew an injury-time save from Yapp from point-blank range.
The match saw three players get sent off including Filipino midfielder Jason de Jong, who got his marching orders in injury time for dissent. Kwok followed him to the showers moments later for a clumsy challenge on Angel Aldeguer that drew a straight red card.

Tuesday, August 30, 2011. PHILIPPINE Men’s Football Team - Azkals co-skipper Emilio "Chieffy" Caligdong will be the guest of honor in the opening rites of the Mayor Doc Eric Minuluan 2011 Football Festival on September 3 in Talisay City.
Two hundred teams from Dumaguete, Cebu, Iloilo and Negros Occidental are set to compete in the tournament scheduled September 3 to 4.

The event is part of the city’s celebration of its annual fiesta in honor of Saint Nicholas de Tolentino. Games will be played simultaneously at the Carlos Hilado Memorial State College (CHMSC) and Talisay City football fields.
Among the teams competing in the 17 under boys in the Bracket-A are Sagasa – Bago City, Barrio Concepcion Slashers – A, St. Benilde School, B.A. Oriental Football Team and Inocencio V. Ferrer Memorial High School.
Under Bracket-B are City of Kabankalan FC, CHSMC, Don Bosco – A, St. John’s FC and Angelicum – Iloilo;

The event is part of the city’s celebration of its annual fiesta in honor of Saint Nicholas de Tolentino. Games will be played simultaneously at the Carlos Hilado Memorial State College (CHMSC) and Talisay City football fields.
Among the teams competing in the 17 under boys in the Bracket-A are Sagasa – Bago City, Barrio Concepcion Slashers – A, St. Benilde School, B.A. Oriental Football Team and Inocencio V. Ferrer Memorial High School.
Under Bracket-B are City of Kabankalan FC, CHSMC, Don Bosco – A, St. John’s FC and Angelicum – Iloilo;
Bago City FC, Escalante City, Don Bosco – B, Himamaylan-A and Rafael B. Lacson NHS will be under Bracket-C
Also under Bracket-D are Barrio Concepcion Slashers – B, Real Negrense FC, Don Bosco – C, Cadiz TMR and Colegio San Nicolas de Tolentino-Recoletos.

Azkals conduct football clinic in Iloilo

MANILA, Philippines – Locals of Guimbal, Iloilo were given a treat when some members of the Philippine Azkals conducted a football clinic in Guimbal National High School last Saturday.
Chieffy Caligdong, Ian Araneta and Roel Gener were among the Azkals who spearheaded the football drills.
They are natives of Barotac Nuevo, touted as the football capital of Iloilo.
The Azkals said that they want to encourage the young Ilonggos to play football, as they have the potential to excel in the world’s most popular sport.
Aside from the 3 Ilonggo natives, Fil-Spanish Angel Guirado also paid a visit to the football clinic.
After the clinic, the Azkals also played in a friendly game with the locals.

PHL Azkals 1, Bahrain 2 in first tune-up match

Emelio "Chieffy" Caligdong shot a goal versus Bahrain's two in the first tune-up game of the men's national football team with the host country's Under-23 Olympic contingent.
"Operating on the left flank, Caligdong unleashed a rocket from nearly 30 yards out that flew into the top-left corner of goal. Bahraini goalkeeper Eyad Nasser Salem had no chance of stopping the well-hit shot, and the Filipino fans erupted in celebration," the Gulf Daily News reported Sunday.
Filipina-Bahraini Zoei Al-Shaikh as Dimples_426 also tweeted the match results from the grandstand of the Bahrain National Stadium in the city of Riffa southwest of the capital, Manama.
Caligdong, an Airman in the Philippine Air Force, scored the goal in the first half of the match.
"We were missing a couple of players here and there, but big credit to our guys who overcame their fatigue and the heat tonight," coach Michael Weiss said after the match as reported by the Gulf Daily News
The next tune-up game will be on July 19 at another venue, the football stadium in the town of Arad on Muharraq Island. Kick-off will be at 12:30am PHL time (7pm in Bahrain).
Bahrain's U-23 team is preparing for the Asian qualifying round of the 2012 London Olympics while the Philippine Azkals are getting ready to meet Kuwait in Round 2 of the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers early morning of July 24.
The Azkals meet Kuwait a second time on home turf on July 28.
Bleachers tickets for that match released Saturday morning were sold out less than an hour after it went on sale via Ticketworld.

Chieffy assumes leadership role for Azkals

WITH team skipper Aly Borromeo barred to play in the Philippine Azkals’ first game against the Kuwaitis, co-captain Emilio “Chieffy” Caligdong has been tasked to assume the leadership role for the national football team.
National coach Hans Michael Weiss said Caligdong will take over Borromeo’s place after the Azkals’ skipper and Fil-German Stephan Schrock were meted a one-game suspension each after incurring two yellow cards in the nationals’ two-game series against Sri Lanka’s Brave Reds.
“I wish I could bring more local guys. But, when you go to a higher level (of competition), it is Chieffy who can rise to the occasion,” said Weiss
The Azkals clash with the Kuwaitis on July 23 at the Mohammad Al Hamad Stadium in Kuwait City, before going back to Manila to host the second match.
Caligdong scored the first of four goals in the Azkals’ impressive 4-0 wipeout of the Sri Lankans at the Rizal Memorial football grounds last Sunday to advance to the second round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Kuwaitis.
The 156th-ranked Azkals are slated to leave for Bahrain on July 14 to play two tune-up games in preparation for their crucial match in Kuwait.
Borromeo and Schrock’s second yellow cards on Sunday automatically resulted to a one-game suspension for both, which means that they will not be allowed to play in the first game against the Kuwaitis.
The Kuwaitis, who are ranked 102nd in the world, will be coached by Goran Tufegdži?, a Serbian. Under Tufegdzic’s watch, the Kuwaitis played a total of 31 matches over the last two years, winning 13, losing four and drawing 14 games.
Tufegdži?’s wards also have a record of 53 goals scored and 29 goals against.
The winner after the two matches will advance to the third round. The official draw for the third round will be held in Brazil on July 30.
