MANILA, Philippines – Several key Azkals players won’t be able to play for the national squad in the Long Teng Cup in September.
ABS-CBN’s Dyan Castillejo reported that Filipino-Europeans Neil Etherdige, Rob Gier, Jerry Lucena, Paul Mulders and Stephan Schrock will be missing the event that is due to take place in Taiwan.
Some of the players are unavailable in September due to commitments with their respective ball clubs in Europe.
"Sorry I won't be able to make the long teng cup I'm sure that the team will do great! Will be supporting them all the way," said Etheridge through Twitter.
The Long Teng Cup is not listed in the coordinated FIFA international match calendar, which is why the football clubs are not compelled to release the players.
Gier, meanwhile, chose to stay close with his wife, who is due to give birth.
"Because of the imminent arrival of my baby girl I will not be taking part in the Long Teng Cup. This does not mean that I won't be taking part in future matches and I look forward to meeting up with the guys again very soon. I hope you all understand that it is an important time for me to be at home," he said through his Facebook account.
Filipino-British siblings Phil and James Younghusband, meanwhile, will be around to provide the needed boost for the Azkals.
They already began training with the rest of the Azkals at the Alabang Country club on Tuesday.
“Good to be back on team, good to see the same old faces. Good as well to get back in training,” said James.
Joining them is 23-year-old Filipino-German recruit Roland Mueller, second choice goalkeeper of German second division squad Duisburg.
Filipino-Dutch Jason de Jong and Filipino-German Manny Ott will join the Azkals as well.

Azkals' Schrock returns to action in Germany

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Azkals midfield spark plug Stephan Schröck returned to action in Germany Saturday, helping Greuther Fürth defeat Dynamo Dresden, 1-0, at the Trolli Arena.
Schrock was deployed at right midfield by Greuther Fürth manager Michael Büskens in the 2. Bundesliga clash.
The Filipino-German was the spearhead of several attacking plays and was unlucky to miss several scoring chances.
With the hosts pushing forward in the 18th minute, Schrock recieved a pass and pulled off a strike that missed the target.
His teammate, Olivier Occean, scored the game's lone goal off an assist from Sebastian Tyrala in the 48th minute.
A minute later, Dresden were reduced to 10 men when Cristian Fiel was sent off for a foul.
Schrock tried to increase Greuther Fürth's lead in the 51st minute but his shot was off the mark.
The visitors tried to launch a fightback but their efforts went for naught, even as another Dresden player, Pavel Fort, was given a red card in the 70th minute.
In the 81st minute, Schrock looked set to ensure their win with a goal but his shot was blocked by Dresden defenders.
Greuther Fürth boss Büskens rested Schrock in the 84th minute, bringing in Christian Rahn to replace the Filipino-German.
The 24-year-old Schrock, whose roots are from Parang in North Cotabato, made his international debut for the Azkals against Sri Lanka last June 29.
He scored the Philippines' lone goal in the Azkals' 1-2 loss to Gulf powerhouse Kuwait in the second leg of their FIFA World Cup qualifying tie at the Rizal Memorial Stadium last June 28.
Greuther Fürth are currently 4th in the 2. Bundesliga table, with 6 points from 3 matches and just a point off league leaders Fortuna Düsseldorf.
Before the 2. Bundesliga match, Greuther Fürth were coming off a 10-0 demolition of German 6th-tier league club Eimsbütteler TV in the opening round of the 2011-2012 DFB-Pokal cup competition.
Greuther Fürth will travel to Paderborn's Energieteam Arena for their next league match on August 13.

Stephan Schrock to rejoin Azkals for second leg against Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY—Filipino-German standout Stephan Schrock will return to Manila to give the Philippine Azkals more midfield bite in their second round World Cup Qualifying clash against powerhouse Kuwait.
Azkals manager Dan Palami confirmed that Schrock, who was suspended for the first leg, will be arriving tomorrow, two days before the return match against the Kuwaitis at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
“He will be a big boost to the team,” Palami said of Schrock, who was a key figure in the first-round win over Sri Lanka.
Schrock’s presence is vital for the Azkals, who may continue to miss the services of midfielders Paul Mulders (injury) and Jerry Lucena (club commitments).
Aly Borromeo is also expected to return after serving his suspension. He was seen taking notes during the first game against Kuwait from the grandstand.
Palami agreed with coach Michael Weiss that the 0-3 deficit may be too big to overcome on aggregate. But the two Azkals officials remain hopeful of an upset.
“We have a tough job in Manila because of that 0-3 deficit,” said Palami. “If only we could have a complete lineup for Manila.”
“Anything is still possible if we get an early goal and with the crowd behind us,” said Weiss.

FIFA: Azkals Borromeo, Schrock will not play in away match vs Kuwait

FIFA officially barred Azkals team captain Aly Borromeo and midfielder Stephan Schrock from playing against Kuwait in the 2014 World Cup qualifying match this Sunday (Manila time).
The football world-governing body rendered its decision against Borromeo and Schrock despite the Asian Football Federation's (AFC) recommendation to let the Filipinos play.
Borromeo, via his Twitter account, said: "Disheartening news for me that I can't be on the pitch with the boys tomorrow.. But I trust the boys will step up and represent!"
The AFC, through its General Secretary Alex Soosay, sent a letter to FIFA Legal Affairs Director Marco Villiger dated July 18, 2011, recommending that the cautions (yellow cards) dealt to Borromeo and Schrock be cancelled. This was done by the AFC as a response to the Philippine Football Federation's (PFF) appeal based on Article 37 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code:
1. Upon its own initiative or at the request of a confederation, the Disciplinary Committee may cancel cautions that have not resulted in an expulsion so as to restore the balance among several teams that have not played the same number of matches during the first round of a competition, or in other exceptional circumstances.
2. In any case, the committee may do this only once in any competition.
3. The Disciplinary Committee’s decision is final.
The PFF hoped that the football governing bodies would let the two Filipinos play "in the spirit of fair play", given Kuwait is ranked 102nd to the Philippines' 159th.
The decision came Friday, in a letter sent by AFC General Secretary Alex Soosay to Ramon Manuel, General Secretary of the PFF. The letter states:
"Kindly be informed that we were adviced by FIFA to which we agree that Article 37 of the FDC applied only to cautions that have not resulted in an expulsion. Your request however is in regards to the following players; Alexander Borromeo and Stephan Schrock who had received two cautions in two different matches in the first round of the said Qualifiers (against Sri Lanka on 29 June 2011 and 03 July 2011 respectively). This warrants an automatic suspension for the match against Kuwait on 23 July 2011. FIFA had sent out the confirmation letter to your good Federation informing the suspension of the two above-mentioned players.
Therefore Article 37 of the FDC is not applicable in the instant case. As such the two cautions received by each of the above-mentioned players cannot be cancelled and they are suspended for the match against Kuwait on 23 July 2011."
"Unfortunately, we did not get the result we desired. Nevertheless, our team will continue to fight to win and represent the country in a way that will make us all proud to be Filipinos," said Philippine Football Federation Treasurer Bonnie Ladrido.
Borromeo's absence means Chieffy Caligdong will act as captain. Possible replacements are Ray Jonsson, Manuel Ott and Jason de Jong, according to Borromeo. --

PFF appeals suspension of 2 Azkals

THE Philippine Football Federation has appealed the one-game suspension of team captain Aly Borromeo and Fil-German midfielder Stefan Schrock, who were slapped two yellow cards in the Azkals’ first round qualifying series against Sri Lanka, to the Asian Football Confederation.
"We made the appeal to the AFC in the spirit of fair play and with the belief that we are severely handicapped without Borromeo and Schrock after having played two matches against Sri Lanka while Kuwait was awaiting us," PFF Mariano Araneta Jr. explained.
The Azkals advanced to the second round–a history first by a national team –after whipping the Sri Lankan Red Devils by a 5-1 aggregate in the home-and-away series, capped by a convincing 4-0 shutout last July 3 at the packed Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Borromeo and Schrock were slapped their second yellow cards in the return match after being booked with one each in the away leg held in Colombo last June 23.
The nationals play the opening leg against Kuwait in Kuwait City on July 23 before returning home for the second match on July 28 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.
"We know the Kuwaitis are superior over the Filipinos already even without these two key players, so we are making this appeal hoping the AFC will allow us to play at full strength and given at least a chance," Araneta said.
With the certain return of Fil-Danish midfielder Jerry Lucena, who saw action for the country in the Asian Challenge Cup group tournament in Myanmar last April, the Filipino booters may survive the loss of Schrock, who is uncertain to play even if his ban is lifted because of commitments to his German club Greuter Furth.
The absence of Borromeo, however, will not only leave a gaping hole in the Philippine backline but also without a proven leader on the pitch.
If his suspension stays, midfielder Chieffy Caligdong has been tasked to be the skipper.
Fil-Icelander Ray Jonsson, who plays left back, will also be back for the Azkals.

De Jong, Hinrichsen to reinforce Azkals

FIL-DUTCH Jason de Jong and Fil-German Patrick Hinrichsen have been tapped to reinforce the Philippine Azkals in the likely event that team captain Aly Borromeo and Filipino-German Stepahn Schrock are barred from playing in the first game of a two-game series against Middle East powerhouse Kuwait two weeks from now.
De Jong and Hinrichsen are set to arrive in Manila and will immediately join their teammates when they leave for Bahrain on July 14 for two tune-up matches against the Bahrain national Olympic team.
De Jong had earlier been tapped to lead the Southeast Asian Games-bound national under-23 team, along with Hinrichsen, a 20-year old attacker who can play both as a midfielder and striker. He plays for SC Eintracht Oberusel back in Germany.
National team coordinator Patrick Ace Bright said the Azkals are slated to play against the Bahrainis on July 16 and 18, as part of their preparation against Kuwait’s Al-Azraq on July 23.
The Azkals play the Bahrainis at 7 p.m at the National Stadium on July 16, and meets the same team again at the Muharraq Stadium in Muharraq two days later.
Before their trip to Bahrain, the Azkals have been practicing with the national under-23 team at the Alabang Country Club football grounds in Muntinlupa.

“It’s going to be a different ballgame. They are a very much stronger team. Nevertheless, we will make sure na prepared tayo,” said Palami.
