Chemistry was what many felt was lacking in the Junior Azkals, the country’s under-23 team competing in the 26th Southeast Asian Games.
On Sunday, it showed.
The Junior Azkals were bamboozled by Myanmar, 0-5, in a match that showed everything lacking in the national team that could be considered as a rag-tag squad that gathered much less attention than their popular elders Azkals.
As result, Myanmar booked itself a seat in the semifinals, tying the three wins as a against a draw record of powerhouse Vietnam in Group B.
A well orchestrated performance from Myanmar condemned the Philippines to a group finish, shattering any lingering dreams of a semi final spot. First half goals from captain Aye San and Kyaw Zayar Win were added to by a double from Kyaw Ko Ko and a fifth goal from Shwe Hlaing Win as Burma dominated the Junior Azkals.
First Half
Before the game the Philippines knew only a win would keep them in contention for qualifying from the group. History didn’t bode well for the Azkals who lost to Burma 4-1 in 1999, the last time the two countries played in the SEA Games.
Any hopes were quickly dampened, however, when Myanmar captain Aye San tapped into an open goal from a corner in the 7th minute. Roland Müller failed to catch the first corner and dropped the ball but was saved when Carli De Murga headed it off the line. The second corner was crossed in and bounced right in front of Müller who let it slip through his fingers and the Myanmar captain Aye San tapped into the open goal.
The Junior Azkals’ only chance of the first half fell to Porteria who was left unmarked at the far post when a well hit cross came in from the left. He skied the volley, though given the position and the difficulty of the technique, it was understandably difficult.
However just a few minutes from half-time Myanmar took a two goal lead when Kyi Lin ran unmarked in the area. He couldn’t control the ball but it bobbled kindly for Kyaw Zayar Win to poke past Müller for his second goal of the tournament in the 41st minute.
Myanmar defender Moe Win then went down awkwardly from the last chance of the half. Jeffrey Christiaens floated in a free-kick from 25 yards rather than shooting and the ball glided out of touch. Moe Win stayed on the floor, however, with commentator Bob Guerrero suggesting he had possibly dislocated or broken his collar bone. His own players immediately signaled for a substitution as the half-time whistle blew leaving the Junior Azkals with another mountain to climb.
Second Half
Mark Hartmann replaced Jinggoy Valmayor at half-time as Coach Weiss looked to Hartmann to cut open the Myanmar side, who only just missed out on the semi finals in the 2009 SEA Games. Just one point behind both Laos and Singapore last time this win takes them a step closer to the Semis.
It was Burma who started the second half sharpest, dribbling directly through the Junior Azkals line and passing through the central defenders for Kyaw Ko Ko to blast the ball past Müller in the 46th minute. The goal put Myanmar three ahead, adding peaks to the mountain.
Myanmar continued to dominate and the defensive problems compounded. Coach Weiss substituted Neckson Leonora for another defender, Reymark Fernandez, something unusual for coaches to do while losing. With only five defenders named for the twenty-three man squad the team conceded their eleventh goal of the campaign when Kyaw Ko Ko lifted the ball over one defender, then a second, before slotting past Müller to give Myanmar an unassailable 4-0 lead in the 55th minute and become the joint top scorer of the tournament so far.
Minutes later the hero from the Laos game, Joshua Beloya, came in for Jeffrey Christiaens who had previously looked the most likely to score for the Philippines. But Beloya had little chance to make an impact as Manny Ott was soon sent off for his second yellow card ten minutes from the end. Though his tackle of the Myanmar player from behind wasn’t that dangerous it was simply one foul too many from Ott and he received his marching orders.
Adding insult to injury, Myanmar scored a fifth and wrapped up the win in injury time as Min Min Thu burst past the defense to collect a through ball. His attempted cross was tipped away by Müller but only into the path of Shwe Hlaing Win who slotted into the open goal in the 92nd minute.
Only Brunei left
This heavy loss confirms that the Philippines will not qualify for the semi-finals. Manny Ott and Roland Müller will also miss the final game of the Junior Azkals’ tournament agaist Brunei as Ott was sent off and Müller picked up his second yellow card of the tournament. Brunei is probably the weakest side in the tournament, though, and the Junior Azkals will be playing for pride on Tuesday, November 15th, 8pm.

Thuwunna Youth Training Center Stadium (or more commonly Thuwunna YTC Stadium) is a multi-use stadium, located in Yangon, Myanmar. The 32,000-seat stadium is smaller but more up-to-date than Aung San Stadium, and is the venue of choice for most national and international level football and track and field competitions. The stadium's eight-lane runway is the first in Myanmar that conforms to the international (IAAF) standards.[2]
Thuwunna National Indoor Stadium, located next to the outdoor stadium, is the country's primary venue for indoor sports.

Azkals Heavily Armed for Myanmar

MANILA, Philippines - Bitter over their failed bid against Mongolia the other day, the Philippine Azkals shift their focus on a bigger, tougher battle ahead – the AFC Challenge Cup group stages in Myanmar – armed to the teeth.
“We have to forget about Mongolia and refocus on our (upcoming) games in Myanmar,” Philippine Football Federation president Nonong Araneta told The STAR before the team checked in at Ulan Bator’s Chinggis Khaan International Airport for their flight back home yesterday.
Slowed down by the biting cold in the Mongolian capital and their exhausting pre-game buildup in quake-hit Japan, the Azkals yielded a 1-2 setback to the Blue Wolves in the second leg of their play-off showdown. But aided by their 2-0 victory in the first leg in Bacolod City, Phl eventually won the duel on aggregate, 3-2, to advance to the group stages set March 21-25 against host Myanmar, Palestine and Bangladesh.
The Azkals felt they let their countrymen down with the loss, making apologies left and right on their respective Twitter accounts.
“Still feeling the loss yesterday (Wednesday),” skipper Aly Borromeo said. “Excuses only set you back further. We need to look to get better every time we step on the pitch!”
Without the punishing sub-zero condition of Mongolia, the Azkals see better days ahead in tropical Yangon. Plus they will have Fil-British goalkeeper Neil Etheridge of Fulham back in the fold and two new strikers, Fil-Spanish Angel Aldeguer Guirado and Fil-German William Espinosa Guiridon to beef up the crew.
Fil-British forward Phil Younghusband, however, is a doubtful starter due to a pulled hamstring.
“(The outlook in Myanmar is) Very good, we’ll have a more complete lineup,” Araneta said. “I’m sure they will play a lot better since the weather will be much better, unlike in Mongolia.”
Etheridge, who skipped the second leg due to club commitment in England, is set to fly in to Manila this week and join the Azkals in their flight to Yangon on Saturday.
“It’s an international break from club football so yes they have allowed me to join the team,” said the 20-year-old Etheridge.
Phil Younghusband, who scored one of Phl’s two goals against the Blue Wolves in Bacolod, was forced out of the second leg after sustaining a hamstring injury in the 65th minute. He is set to undergo MRI scan upon the team’s arrival in Manila today to know the extent of his injury.
“Masakit pa rin ang injury ko (My hamstring still hurts),” Younghusband said. “Hindi ko pa alam kung pwede ako maglaro sa Myanmar. Sana makalaro ako (I still don’t know if I can play group stages but I hope I can). “
If Younghusband won’t be around, Araneta said they expect Aldegeur Guirado, a tall striker from the Spanish Division III club Deportivo Ronda, to fill in. Araneta also said the team is hopeful that Fil-British Rob Gier and Fil-Dutch midfielder Jason de Jong will come over after missing the Ulan Bator outing.
The Philippines will be the highest in terms of FIFA ranking among the four teams in Group A of the qualifiers. The Azkals (No. 151) play host Myanmar (162) on March 21, Bangladesh (174) on March 23 and Palestine (177) on March 25, hoping to emerge in the Top 2 of the group to advance to the AFC Challenge Cup’s tournament proper next year.
Phl and Myanmar played to a scoreless draw in the AFF Suzuki Cup group stage last year. As to Palestine and Bangladesh, Araneta said: “We don’t have an idea about them so we’re working to get scouting reports.”

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals will need to win at least 2 out of 3 games in the group stage to make it to the main draw of the Asian Football confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup tournament proper in 2012.
Unlike the Philippines’ qualifying tie against Mongolia, where they battled in a home-and-away series, the group stage will pit the Azkals against three teams in their bracket.
The Azkals will face national teams from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Palestine.
The Myanmar White Angels are currently ranked No. 161 in FIFA’s world standings.
The Bangladesh Bengal Tigers are ranked No. 174, while Palestine’s Al-Fusan (The Fighters) are ranked 178th.
The Philippines, ranked No. 151, has the highest ranking in the bracket.
The following will be the tentative schedule for the Azkals’ group stage games.
* · March 21 (Mon) - PHI vs. Myanmar, 3:30 p.m.;
* · March 23 (Wed) - PHI vs. Palestine, 3:30 p.m;
* · March 25 (Fri) - PHI vs. Bangladesh, 6 p.m.
All games will be held in Myanmar.
Doubtful
Azkals' Filipino-British striker Phil Younghusband, meanwhile, remains doubtful of playing in the group stage.
Younghusband, a vital cog in the Azkals’ offense, suffered a pulled hamstring during their 1-2 loss to Mongolia on Tuesday. He was not able to finish the game because of the injury.

Weiss said he is already preparing for their alternate players who can take Younghusband’s place.
“We will have two strikers, one from Germany, William Espinosa and [Angel] Aldeguer from Spain. We will have to try to make up for Phil's injury,” he said.
Also returning to the Azkals line-up are Filipino-British players Niel Etheridge and Rob Gier. They will be joined by another new addition, Patrick Hinrichsen from Germany.
The Azkals were still able to advance to the group stage because of a 3-2 aggregate.
The Filipino booters were enjoying a 2-0 lead over the Mongolians before their 1-2 loss in Ulan Bator.
Weiss said the team gained a lot from their experience going into the Mongolia game.
Aside from enduring inconveniences in their team practice in Japan, the Azkals had to battle the Mongolians in sub-zero conditions in Ulan Bator.
“I think the team has learned a lot from these past couple of weeks,” said Weiss.
"I am positive we will make it to the Top 2 in Myanmar.”
The Azkals are expected to arrive in Manila early Thursday morning.
“Hindi ko alam kung pwedeng maglaro sa Myanmar... sana makapaglaro ako," he said.
It might take weeks before his injury can be fully healed.
Azkals German coach, Hans Michael Weiss, said it is too early to say if Younghusband will have to sit out the group stage.

The star striker, 23, pulled his hamstring in the second half of the team’s 1-2 loss to Mongolia in the rematch of their series in the chilly Ulan Bator Tuesday, thus making it impossible for him to play in the next stage.
The Azkals, who will arrive today along with Philippine Football Federation chief Mariano Araneta and team manager Dan Palami, progressed to the group stage despite the loss owing to their superior aggregate tally, 3-2, in the home-and-away series, counting their 2-0 win in Bacolod City.
Holder of 13 international goals for the Philippines, the Filipino-British’s absence will be greatly felt, but the German coach was quick to name able substitutes who are already listed in the roster for the group stage.
“Phil will be out for Myanmar, but we have new players coming in. Of course, it’s sad he will not be there, but we have good options – William Espinosa and Filipino-Spanish Angel Aldeguer Guirado,” Weiss said in an e-mail to the Bulletin.
Guirado, 26, who plays for the Spanish Division III club Deportivo Ronda of Malaga, has impressed Weiss no end when the attacking midfielder practiced with the team recently. Espinosa was raised in
Laguna, but learned football in Germany where his surname was legally changed to Gueridon although his passport still carries Espinosa.
Weiss sees promising results in Myanmar especially with the return of goalie Neil Etheridge although Chris Greatwich will continue to be absent.
“Etheridge will play and chances for the group stage are good. We have strong opponents (but) with all good factors coming together, we can qualify for the best 8,” Weiss said.
The Azkals will be part of Group A where they will face the host, Palestine (March 23) and Bangladesh (March 25). The top two squads after the single-round tourney qualify for the eight-nation main draw in 2012.
