(reports from: Manila Bulletin)
MANILA, Philippines – For sure, the Philippine Azkals will no longer chill under the sub-zero condition when they battle Mongolia in the second leg of their AFC Challenge Cup qualifier in Ulan Bator on March 15.
That’s because the Azkals will be wearing a high-tech football gear equipped with a Japanese thermal technology made especially by Mizuno, the official outfitter of the Philippine Football Federation.
Paolo Cagalingan, Master Sports-Mizuno general manager, said apart from the long-sleeved jersey, shorts and gloves, Mizuno will provide the 23-man Azkals thermal underwear equipped with “Breath Thermo” technology that will keep the players warm even when the temperature drops to a chilly condition.
The thermal technology is used by Japanese teams competing in winter events. The Ulan Bator match is set at 1 p.m., the warmest time of day with temperature ranging from -2 and -15 degrees Celsius.
“With these gears, I believe we can do better than what we did in Bacolod City,” PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said after the formal turnover of the Mizuno gears to the national team at the PFF headquarters in Pasig City yesterday.
Araneta was referring to Azkals 2-0 victory over Mongolia during the first leg of their home-and-away match at the Panaad Stadium.
Azkals co-team captain Emelio “Chieffy” Caligdong said the thermal wear will help the players focused more on the game because they will no longer worry of the cold condition.
“Malaking tulong ito especially sa mga locals na hindi sanay sa ganung kalamig na kondisyon,” Caligdong said.
Cagalingan noted that the jerseys will have long sleeves but will remain lightweight so it will not limit the movements of the players on the pitch.
Caligalingan said they will also come out with the national team’s jerseys for the World Cup qualifier the PFF is hoping to host in June.
The jerseys will go on sale in May.

Suzuki Backs PFF Under-23 Tournament
(report from Philippine Daily Inquirer)
MANILA—The Philippine Football Federation has found another backer in Japanese automobile maker Suzuki, which is sponsoring the National Men’s Under-23 Championship starting next month.
PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said Thursday that they have agreed to terms with Suzuki for a sponsorship deal of P3.2 million for the national tournament.
It will mark the first time that the PFF will stage an Under-23 tournament and Araneta said the move is meant to help them come up with the best possible squad for the Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta late this year.
“We hope to get the finest Under-23 talents from this tournament for our SEA Games team,” said Araneta. “We are happy that Suzuki is supporting us in our efforts to improve football.”
Football in the SEA Games is limited to under-23 players.
Suzuki is no stranger to supporting football, having been tapped by the Asean Football Federation as sponsor of the AFF Suzuki Cup the last three years.
The top two from each of the cluster tournaments in the National Capital Region, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will advance to the national championship in June. Araneta said they plan to apply the home-and-away format for the finals.
“Although there have been several players based abroad who are being eyed to banner the SEA Games squad, the standouts from the Under-23 tournament will also be given a chance to prove themselves,” said Araneta. “We want the best possible team for the SEA Games.”

"She's into football also," ani James. "Yes I am [taken]."
"I've hung out with her a few times but we're in the getting-to-know-you stage," ani Phil.
"May lips are sealed. 'Pag ganyan, ayokong magsalita," aniya.
